It will bring tears to your eyes when you have to leave this place again. Byron Bay is one of Australia’s most beautiful seaside resorts if not the whole world. Small and family-friendly, but at the same time rocky and relaxed with a sweet touch of hippie feeling – yes, this place is very special.

Byron Bay is located at the easternmost point of the Australian mainland, about 200 kilometres south of Brisbane. He is not only an absolute must for tourists, but Australians also come from all over the country to the small coastal town to experience a fantastic weekend. Surfing, beach life and the unmistakable nightlife that makes Byron Bay so special is rounded off by beautiful hiking trails, snorkelling adventures and probably the most spectacular skydive in the world. I’ll tell you everything you need to know: the most beautiful corners, the coolest bars, and the sights in Byron Bay, as well as the following insider tips.

Your journey to the Australian paradise

Byron Bay is located in the middle of Australia’s east coast and belongs to the state of New South Wales. It is 200 km south of Brisbane and around 800 km north of Sydney. Most holidaymakers and backpackers visit the small coastal town during their trip along the east coast. A popular route with a campervan or bus is Cairns to Brisbane or Cairns to Sydney. For most people, Byron Bay is one of the biggest highlights on this route.

But even if you don’t have your car, a trip here is worth it: The Greyhound bus runs regularly to Byron Bay and back north or south. Small day and weekend tours can be booked from Brisbane and Surfers Paradise.

Before you spend a lot of money on it, I advise you to ask in Couchsurfing forums or the Couchsurfing Gold Coast Facebook group whether anyone is going to Byron Bay and could take you with them. Almost every weekend, people put out a call here, and they almost always find someone. You share the petrol money and either book the same hostel or go your own way – it’s all very relaxed.

If you are in another part of Australia and want to take a trip to Byron Bay – and believe me, you do – then Gold Coast Airport is the best option, as there are often very cheap domestic flights there. From here, you can get to Byron Bay in 50 minutes by car, or you can take a bus or train. The next largest international airport is Brisbane Airport – from here, it takes two hours, but by bus and train, it takes a lot longer.

Hostels and Caravan Parks in Byron Bay

Of course, you can also take a day trip to Byron Bay, but you would miss out on a lot. A weekend, i.e. two nights, or even just one night, is enough to give you a good impression of this charming city, to get a feel for the atmosphere here. Most travellers, including most locals, come to Byron Bay with a campervan or a car with camping equipment. There are several caravan parks where you can park your van and put up your tent. You will meet a lot of Australians on the camping grounds, including a lot of stag and hen parties – the atmosphere is accordingly good.

The remaining half of the young travellers, mainly tourists but also some Australians, stay in hostels. Although Byron Bay has just under 5,000 inhabitants, there are almost as many hostels here. OK, maybe not quite as many, but at least ten. I can recommend the Aquarius Backpacker Byron Bay, for example. Just a few metres from the beach, there is a pretty lively atmosphere here. In addition to various events, there is a weekly quiz night – this is when things really get going in Byron Bay!

If you want to really let off steam and quickly make new contacts in the hostel, the Arts Factory Lodge is probably the best place for you. The people here are just totally relaxed, sometimes you could even say they are almost uninhibited.

A dream beach for surfing, snorkelling and diving

It is not for nothing that Byron Bay is one of the most visited towns on the Australian east coast. A kilometre-long sandy beach turns the town into a small paradise. The Main Beach is located directly opposite the town’s city centre. Most visitors come here to sunbathe and enjoy the water – so it can sometimes get crowded. The special thing about this stretch of beach: just a few meters out to sea is the shipwreck of the Tassie II, which is great to discover while snorkelling. But be careful of the currents, on some days the sea is too rough – it’s best to ask the lifeguards on the beach beforehand.

In general, there are dozens of shipwrecks off the coast of Byron Bay, also further north towards Belongil Beach and south to Clarkes Beach, which can be explored either with a snorkel or during a dive. One of the best diving spots in Byron Bay, and one of the top ten in Australia, is “Julian Rocks”. Ten minutes by dinghy from the beach, you can expect an incredible variety of underwater life – huge fish, schools of fish, giant turtles, moray eels, impressive rays and a multitude of sharks, such as Grey Nurse Sharks with an average size of 2.5 meters. If you go diving or snorkelling here, you don’t need to be too afraid of sharks, as there are many harmless, calm sharks off the coast of Byron Bay.

If you are in Byron Bay by car, you should visit the beautiful beaches in the area. To name just a few, there is Watego’s Beach – just before the tip of the point- and Cosy Corner and Tallow Beach along the coast to the south. Only a few holidaymakers find their way to these beaches, so you often have the kilometre-long beach to yourself.

Another famous stretch of beach, especially popular among locals, is “The Wreck”. Directly to the north of the Main Beach, just a few meters below the water, a shipwreck which creates excellent surfing waves due to its special location. Surfers from all over Australia travel here to ride some of the magnificent waves. But The Wreck is also suitable for beginners; depending on the position in relation to the ship, small or large barrels are created.

In addition to diving, snorkeling and surfing, there are many other ways to experience the water in Byron Bay. For example, on a canoe tour or stand up paddle boarding. From May to November you even have the opportunity to watch whales . At this time they come quite close to the coast of Byron Bay.

Sightseeing or skydiving?

The most obvious attraction, the landmark of Byron Bay, is the lighthouse, the Cape Byron Lighthouse, which marks the easternmost point of mainland Australia. A visit is an absolute must. You just have to see a view like that. You can either drive up here in your car or – and I recommend this – you take the Byron Bay Headland Walk. From the Main Beach, you simply walk south down the beach until you come to a small path leading up to the lighthouse.

Many people set off at sunset, just following the crowds. I must admit, the climb is not easy – it’s an easy one and a half hours, but it’s definitely worth it!

Another attraction that Byron Bay is known for worldwide is skydiving. Adventurers fall from the sky almost every second. The panorama, the incredible view over the Australian east coast and the vastness of the Tasman Sea convince most action fans to go on a skydiving adventure in Byron Bay – would you be there too?

Byron Bay is often referred to as a small hippie town. It’s not just the clothes that make the residents and holidaymakers here a little more alternative; their leisure activities also focus on a spiritual and alternative lifestyle. You can feel this on every corner. Different shows take place here every evening. Small groups often form to play drums and put on a fire show.

Nimbin is probably the craziest and, at the same time, a most relaxed city in Australia.

People meditate and share problems – right on the beach, often in the adjacent car park, and anyone who wants to can join in. But if you want to experience a 100% hippie lifestyle, you should take a trip to the town of Nimbin. Just an hour’s drive to the west, you’ll experience a leap back in time to Woodstock. Brightly coloured houses, coffee shops, and Rasta men and women, as far as the eye can see, make Nimbin probably the craziest and most relaxed town in Australia.

Nightlife in Byron Bay

Hippie or not, at night Byron Bay shines in a new light and becomes the ultimate party town. Australians come here from all over the country to go from one party to the next. You will find bars and clubs on every corner in Byron Bay. Many houses look boring and dignified from the outside, but don’t let that put you off – it’s usually a completely different story inside. There is live music in a variety of bars and pubs. 365 days a year, and for 30 years, you can experience newcomer bands and solo artists in ” The Rails ” – for many locals and holidaymakers, the best pub in Byron Bay. It is located right in the centre of the city, next to the historic Byron Bay train station. You can have fast, good food here and a large selection of beers and ciders.

I can also recommend Miss Margarita . Located almost directly on the beach, lots of people go here to get in the mood for the evening, enjoy a few drinks, maybe something to eat. The bar is huge and turns into a club in the evening, with a dance floor and harder beats. But if you just want to party, with a real club feeling, then go to Cheeky Monkey . There’s dancing here until the early hours of the morning.

My best tip though: you won’t be alone for long in Byron Bay. No matter where you stay or where you go, you’ll meet people. Just join them and go out and see the sights. Even if you’re travelling alone, you can have a lot of fun here – the people are super relaxed and very extroverted.

Byron Bay is a very cool, very unusual little town. Although so many tourists come here, it has never lost its charm and is still as authentic as it was 20 years ago – and yet very open to new people! Visit this great place and see for yourself – you won’t regret it, that’s for sure.
